American producers pulled off a record canola yield in 2025, although production still declined year-over-year due to a smaller planted and harvested areas.
The USDA’s 2025 crop production summary on Monday pegged last year’s American canola crop at 2.109 million tonnes, down 4% from the 2024 crop of 2.206 million. The average yield, at a new high of 40.3 bu/acre, was up 4.5 bu from the prior year’s average yield. However, that gain was offset as planted and harvested area both fell 15% to 2.34 million 2.31 million acres, respectively.
Production in North Dakota, the leading canola-producing state, was estimated at 1.73 million tonnes, a decline of 3% from 2024. Production represented the second largest total for North Dakota on record, while the average yield, at 42.4 bu/acre, was a record high. Planted and harvested area in North Dakota were down 15% from 2024 but both were still the third highest on record.
In comparison, the 2025 Canadian canola crop amounted to a record 21.803 million tonnes, with an average yield of 44.7 bu/acre, also a record high. Canadian canola harvested area, at about 21.4 million acres, was down slightly from 21.85 million in 2024.
